Come join us at Sustainable Settings outside Carbondale, Colorado for 4 days of sheepskin hide tanning and animal processing. We will be utilizing the whole animal as we start the weekend off with a humane animal slaughter, followed by 3 days of brain tanning sheepskin rugs.

We will be joined by Gabe Crawford, professional butcher, for our animal processing day. Students can expect to learn all aspects of a humane and honorable harvest of a sheep including processing and butchery. We will feast this evening and be eating from the lamb throughout the weekend.

The rest of the weekend, we will dive deep into the art, craft and science of braintanning sheepskin rugs. Students will tan their own hide and walk away with the knowledge to tan many different types of hides. We will have tanning talks and demonstrations sprinkled in throughout the weekend. Students will leave with their own finished sheepskin rug.

A simple breakfast and hearty dinner will be provided each day. Students are responsible for their own lunches and snacks. The dinners will be utilizing the animal that we processed. Camping is available on site that includes showers, bathrooms and running water. All materials are included in the cost.

The animal processing is available as a stand alone class on Thursday June 4th.

Join us at Owl Peak Studio for a week long immersion where you’ll be introduced to several different land-based crafts. By the end of the week, you’ll take home your finished crafts: micaceous pottery, willow baskets, and naturally tanned Navajo-Churro sheepskin rugs. You’ll have the skills and historical context to explore connection to your own home place more deeply and to share local, land-based crafts with the people in your life.

Micaceous Pottery: Unique to northern New Mexico, this style of pottery was passed down through Felipe Ortega at Owl Peak Studio. Renowned for its cookware abilities, students will have the opportunity to make one small bean pot and possible a few other smaller items.

Willow Basketry: Weave a round base willow harvest basket. Learn fundamental stake and strand weaving techniques, and the intersection between basket weaving and land stewardship in northern New Mexico watersheds.

Navajo Churro Sheepskins: Learn the art, craft and science of brain tanning. We will be brain tanning Navajo-Churro sheepskin rugs utilizing old style methods. Navajo Churro have a rich history in the Rio grande watershed.

This unique course includes shared lodging at Owl Peak Studio, breakfast and dinner each day, and all material costs. Participants will bring own lunch and snacks.

This class can be taken in three different ways: a full weekend (Thursday-Friday) that includes animal processing and hide tanning, a 3 day hide tanning weekend class, or a single day animal processing class. When you signing up for the full weekend, that includes the animal processing portion AND the hide tanning portion.
